MAT 110 Introduction to Massage Therapy

This course provides an overview of the field of massage therapy and the philosophies of complementary healthcare. Topics covered include the history of massage, various forms of bodywork, movement techniques, energy balancing, psychotherapy, introduction to Energy Work, Shiatsu, Reiki, Reflexology, Acupressure, sports massage, holistic medicine, natural healing, licensure requirements, education, employment opportunities, and professional organizations. The Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics for the massage therapist will be discussed. The student is required to receive at least one full body massage by a licensed massage therapist during the semester. Two lecture hours per week. Instructional Support Fee applies. 2 credits. Fall, Spring, Summer.
