MTH 141 Technical Mathematics I

This course provides engineering technicians with the necessary mathematical tools to solve engineering problems. Topics covered are: scientific notation; units of measurement; review of algebra; functions; the trigonometric functions; right angle trigonometry; and vectors and oblique triangles. Prerequisite: Arithmetic Competency; and Intermediate Algebra Competency. Four lecture hours per week. 4 credits Fall

### Course Outcomes

1. Use the rectangular coordinate system to solve problems involving lines including slope, midpoint, average rate of change and solving linear equations and applications.

2. Determine graphically is an equation is a function, use function notation effectively and determine translation and reflection of functions.

3. Solve systems of equations graphically, algebraically and by using determinants.

4. Use the trigonometric functions to effectively solve applications including solving right triangles and radian applications.

5. Solve vector application problems.

6. Solve oblique triangles using the Law of Sines and the Law of Cosines.

7. Use the rules of exponents to solve problems involving scientific notation, polynomial arithmetic and factoring and solving quadratic equations.
